I don't see the icon noise representation of the fractal like I do on Linux. On Linux I can see the node in the hypershade as a noise on the icon and it changes with the noise settings. On my windows box it is only a MR generic icon with no interactive representation of the noise. Is that something I can fix?

Hi

By default the icon on windows is represented by a the icon file, that you copy on installation.
Windows Maya always uses this icon. (Besides for Maya software shader, these are implemented to re-render)

I found out that hydraulx has an override so the noise shows up on the icon like other maya noises. So it's not a win or linux thing.

Ok, googled a bit and found the term for it, you have to write a mel file, which includes the shader name:
