This is a small user survey about the Binary Alchemy volume shaders.
In case you are not a direct user, please forward this email to your shader artists.
If we get enought replies for the the survey and it was effective,
then it will lead into a FREE UPDATE from v3.0 to v3.x.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Technical side: What is the default setup for a scene with volumes on your site.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

a) LIGHTS
- How many lights do you use?
- How many of them are casting shadows?
- Are the lights colored or do you color/post-light the volumes in compositing.
- Do you often use colored shadows from your volume.
- Do you have other objects in the scene that cast colored shadows?

b) MEMORY
- Do you often reach the memory limit of the volume shader. That you have to accept the drawback of too low shadow detail?

a)
- Generally no more than three lights. A key, a fill and a rim.
- Generally the key and rim will have shadows.
- I have done both colored lights in app, and added color in post.
- I don't believe that I have used colored shadows as of yet.
- Generally BA Volumes are in their own pass w/o other shadow casting objects.

b)
Yes, I often exceed memory limit when using 32bit. If timeline and circumstances permit, I'll use my sole, memory packed 64bit machine to avoid this. Shadow detail is often the first to be reduced to get BAvolume scenes to render.

EDIT: I should note that I've been using 2.03, and 3.0 hasn't been tried yet.

1. A) Usually a three light setup, but sometimes as many as 9 lights.
Only one casting shadows.
The lights are usually colored.
Occasionally use colored shadows.
No other objects with colored shadows.

B) No. Just have to live with long render times. This has me bail out more
and make adjustments more than memory issues.

LIGHTS
- How many lights do you use?

Usually 3 or less. I typically start with one to get basic look, then add only if needed. The problems are usually in the shadowed areas, which tend to go flat with just one light. I would like to use the ambient occlusion feature more, but haven't had sufficient time to really test it.

- How many of them are casting shadows?

Most if not all of them.

- Are the lights colored or do you color/post-light the volumes in compositing.

Most often, this is done in compositing.

- Do you often use colored shadows from your volume.

Not really.

- Do you have other objects in the scene that cast colored shadows?

Shadows are usually renderd as a pass that will be manipulated in comp.

MEMORY
- Do you often reach the memory limit of the volume shader. That you have to accept the drawback of too low shadow detail?

Yes. As you know, I had you increase the 64-bit memory limit. This is a very welcome fix, which we have put to immediate use.

For my stage of the pipeline VFX/Simulation I am often inheriting scenes with many 5-15 (or more) raytraced lights and many passes setup.

But I am in charge of my own output. So I light myself with maybe no more than 3 of my own lights (hiding or deleting all the others). And my own Pass with partitions.
For most particle shots I avoid raytraced/shadow lights unless the effect really benefits from it-like BA. (o:'

Then I tweak in pre-comp against the lighting teams output. Final comp is done by the comp team.
