Hey Holger,

I've been using the flakes shader a lot lately and one of the major problems I have with it is the perlin noise. Perlin noise creates too many undulations in the overall texture which can be seen as patchy dark and light areas that cover the overall flake texture. In the future it would be awesome if we could have a more evenly distributed noise type that more closely replicates a randomly distributed flake structure.

I wish I could just remove the perlin noise and just use a random funtion for the flakes.

Hi

Do you have a render/screenshot to explain the problem a bit more?

You can not use "just a random" function. That would be pixel-noise only.
And they will not shape a flake.

It appears to be related to the flatness setting. If I increase the flatness setting Is tart getting irregular patches instead of a nice even distribution... you can see it in the attached image. I'm trying to set up the flakes for car paint which requires flatter flakes.

One more ss. You can see the really obvious areas of distortion that are affecting entire patches of flakes causing a very blob like appearance. I'm not sure why this is tied to flake flatness but it is.
