Is my memory playing tricks on me or was there once a sample scene showing how to apply the volume shader to a deforming object so that the volume "texture" deforms with the object?

I'm looking for a way to make squishy felt balls, and the volume cloud shader with fractal noise providing the density gives me an ideal appearance, but I can't remember if it's even possible to apply the deformation directly to the volume shader.

There was a shader to span a cubic texture between two grids.
But this is not working in the latest MRay versions.
