How do you get the particle volume to rotate/animate round each frame? I have played around with the Roll/Screw settings but nothing seems to happen. Do you need to hook something up to the particles?

Thanks

graham

Hi

The roll/screw parameters of the PT_density shader only work if you set an rotation type.
"Align to velocity"/ "Direct to- Look at Point"

Otherwise you can set a rotPP vector attribute for the particles in Maya. That is used if there is no rotation type selected in the PT density shader.
(rotPP is in degrees, not radians)

I have tried setting the rotation type to Direct to Look at Point, but I still get no roll/screw.

Are the Min Max values a per frame attribue, so they should keep rolling over the animation?

Thanks

Graham

The min-max are per particle. Each particle gets a fixed value betwen min and max.
It is not a parameter how fast the particles roll/screw.
It is a parameter *which* roll screw they have.

Like the rotation settings in each maya transform node.
So to get an animation, you have to animate the roll screw value.

I can't seem to get the shader to obey the rotation as described above (rotPP). I seem to remember older versions of the shader outputting (to the terminal) the attrs that were being used. I am not seeing that anymore, but my particle does have the rotPP attr (verified both using component editor and also using and instanced sphere rotated by rotPP). I have rotation type set to --NONE--.

Any suggestions?

OK, I tried it on a very simple scene and it seems to be working as expected. It still doesn't output anything to the terminal regarding this, but visually it works.
false alarm i guess.
Is there any way to turn on more verbose progress messages? Or see which data is being used.

Hi

What is your level of the mental Ray verbose?

Afaik you have to click on the small icon at the end of the menu item for render settings to change the mRay verbose, but I cannot test it right now as I am not in the office.
