'BlobMesh' is a separate compound object. All it takes from the simulation is the location of the particles to define the influence fields and build an iso-surface which is a competely independent mesh

yes this is a feature that a rival application has, but im trying to do some lava at the moment and this would be an extremely neat feature to have in xsi for all sorts of reasons.

You can use the solid volume shader, it does create metaballs.
Take a look at the sample scene Volumesolid_particles.

It is not a geometry shader (will be a feature of version 3.0), so it does not support displacement, but you can influence the surface with a fractal like the cloud particles.
